About
SysDesignWiki
SysDesignWiki is a practical learning resource for engineers who want to understand how software systems are shaped by tradeoffs, costs, cloud constraints, failure modes, and operational reality.
Why This Exists
Most system design learning either stays too theoretical or jumps straight into hyperscale architecture theater. This site focuses on the middle ground: the mental models that help engineers reason about practical 0->1 designs, understand what breaks first, and know what to measure before adding complexity.
What Each Guide Teaches
- Starting designs - the simplest serious version of a capability
- Tradeoffs - what each choice gives up, not just what it enables
- Cost drivers - the meters and usage patterns that make systems expensive
- Failure modes - the common ways designs degrade under real pressure
- Cloud mappings - how provider services shape otherwise logical architecture
- Breakpoints - the signals that tell a team when the starting design needs to evolve
- Evidence and assumptions - what is known, inferred, simplified, or intentionally out of scope
Scope & Methodology
SysDesignWiki is learning-first. It does not claim to prescribe exact production architectures, exact costs, provider quota guarantees, or the private internals of large companies. Case studies are treated as learning models based on public information and architectural inference.
Technology
This site is built with Astro and styled withTailwind CSS v4. Architecture diagrams are rendered usingMermaid.js with a custom theme to match the editorial aesthetic.
